Heraeus Virtual Hydrogen Talks: Do EU Regulations for Critical Raw Materials and Fluoropolymers Support the Hydrogen Ramp-Up?

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolysis has been described as a pivotal technology in establishing a hydrogen economy. It involves platinum and iridium as hard-to-replace raw materials, and especially iridium is scarce and hence critical.

PEM also requires fluoropolymers as membrane material, which fall under the proposed PFAS ban – although they are regarded as “polymers of no concern.”

In March 2023, the European Commission released its “Critical Raw Material Act” (CRMA), the European Strategy for raw materials. Shortly before, the ECHA proposed the PFAS ban. What does this mean for the industry? Will the proposed measures for critical raw materials serve their goal and help Europe to reach its targets for the ramp-up of hydrogen and PEM Electrolysis, respectively? Can fluoropolymers in PEM Electrolyzers be replaced, and by when? What does this uncertainty make with the investments in Europe? Discuss with the experts and your peers!
